Police School

Lessons for Life works with the Police School which is located in Nsambya opposite the Police barracks. This neighbourhood backs onto the same slums as Railway School and is surrounded by small housing for the police. It was built initially for the children of police families but takes in children from all over the area.

Assisted Attendance Scheme

Lessons for Life supports 92 pupils to attend this school that would have otherwise dropped out.

There is still a great issue of pupils whose families do not consider education important, especially for girls. In such cases, they take the child out of school if they cannot afford the fees. Girls in particular are more likely to become house girls or have early pregnancies.

Although a large school, some of the classrooms cannot be used as they are crumbling or have leaking roofs. The classrooms for P1 and P2 often flood during heavy rains. The site has a fresh water spring but the  drainage system is now failing the school. The classrooms doors have had concrete steps built up to protect from the rain but these too often get flooded.

The money from the Assisted Attendance scheme will allow some of these problems to be tackled as well as allowing pupils to join school in P1 with reasonable certainty of being able to progress through to P7 when they take their school leavers certificate exams. The school provides students with a meal once a day. The kitchen area uses wood fires and massive pots to cook beans and Posho.
